Mowing the right way
UConn’s Home & Garden Education Center recommends keeping cool-season lawns at about 2½ to 3 inches, removing no more than one third of the blade at a time, and keeping mower blades sharp. Cutting too short stresses the grass and lets weeds take hold. We aim to follow that guidance. The stripes you see in our photos come from changing the mowing direction.

Questions
How often should a lawn be mowed?
During active growth most lawns need mowing about once a week. Mowing less often in summer heat and dry spells is normal, because growth slows. We will suggest a schedule when we look at your property.
Do you leave the clippings?
UConn recommends leaving clippings on the lawn, where they return nutrients to the soil. If you prefer them bagged, tell us when you ask for an estimate.
Can you stripe my lawn?
Yes. The stripes come from changing the mowing direction and the way the grass blades bend, so they show best on healthy, evenly cut grass.
